Yet another popular Zinus mattress that is getting extremely good reviews and ratings from consumers. The Zinus Sleep Master Ultima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress is very affordable and, for most owners, very comfortable. It also uses green tea extract to help maintain freshness and some of the traditionally petroleum-derived ingredients have been replaced with natural plant oils. In addition, the foam is CertiPUR-US certified (has met stringent standards for content, emissions, & durability). Some people find the edge support a little weak however and the mattress sometimes does not expand to the full advertized height.

Consumer Ratings
Owner ratings for this Zinus mattress are very plentiful (over 5500 at the time of writing) and quite good.  They average about 4.5 stars out of 5, and for an inexpensive mattress that is a good rating.  In the table below we show the owner ratings on both Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.

Amazon.com 4.5 stars out of 5 5532
Amazon.ca 4.8 stars out of 5 28
What Are Owners Saying?
A thorough review of owner comments provides the following mattress likes, dislikes and insights:
- Inexpensive
- Most owners feel it is very comfortable
- Limited motion transfer
- Average edge support
- Some units have a chemical smell for a few days
- Sometimes doesn’t expand to full height
While some folks don’t like the mattress, it is apparent from the excellent ratings that most people do.  There are many comments stating that you simply cannot find this comfortable a mattress at this low a price anywhere else.  Indeed, in our experience, this is a very affordable memory foam mattress.
On the plus side owners switching to this mattress from an inner spring model report deeper, longer sleep sessions.  We also see many comments about sleepers experiencing less back pain or joint pain.  However we have seen this kind of thing reported with a lot of memory foam mattresses so it isn’t unique to this particular one.
Also, people are impressed with how little motion transfer takes place with this Zinus mattress.  When your partner moves you typically feel very little motion on your side of the bed.  This again is a feature of memory foam and is often most noticed by those moving from a spring mattress to memory foam for the first time.
Zinus Memory Foam Mattress
There are a few areas where owners disagree - most notably, whether or not the mattress is firm.  Most feel that it is fairly firm but there are some owners who report that it is too soft for their liking.  It may be interesting to note that the manufacturer, Zinus, states that this is a medium/firm mattress.
The other contentious area is whether or not the mattress sleeps hot.  Memory foam mattresses are notorious for retaining heat.  This is why you see so many “cooling” features in these kinds of mattresses.  Surprisingly most Zinus owners report that this mattress does not sleep hot, however there are still some people who complain about heat retention.
With respect to smell, many people report no chemical smell given off by the mattress, while others report a factory/chemical/plastic odor.  Fortunately in almost all cases where an odor was detected it disappeared after a day or two.  Having the mattress in a well ventilated area for the first few days helps.  It is possible that the limited odor is the result of Zinus using CertiPUR-US certified foams (more about that later).
Another issue, although not too frequent, is that the mattress is not the height expected.  These mattresses are delivered vacuum packed and in some cases the mattress does not expand to its full advertized height upon being opened.  For example an 8 inch mattress may only expand to 7 inches.

A Word About Zinus
Zinus has been around since 1979 and was originally focused on outdoor equipment like tents, sleeping bags, etc.  In the early 2000's they began to focus on indoor products including mattresses.  The company has an ISO-9001 certified facility in Xiamen, China which handles production.  They also have headquarters and distribution centers in California.  According to the Zinus website the company is a Better Business Bureau accredited business with an A+ rating.  The name Zinus isn’t that well known but they manufacture under a host of popular names such as Spa Sensations, Sleep Master, Night Therapy, Best Price Mattress and others.

Zinus mattresses tend to be quite affordable when compared to many other memory foam mattresses on the market today.  This is perhaps due to them being factory direct and the company doesn't spend the kind of money on marketing that you will see with some of the larger brands.  In addition, the product is made offshore and therefore takes advantage of lower costs.

Zinus also has another very popular, top selling mattress that we have reviewed.  This is the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea Mattress.  Yes you read that right – green tea mattress. This mattress also gets great reviews and actually has an incredible 12,000+ owner ratings and comments on Amazon.  You can see the mattress on Amazon if you like.

Foam Layers
This Zinus Memory Foam Mattress is available in different heights – 8, 10 and 12 inches.  We will focus on the 8 inch version in this review.
The 8 inch mattress has 3 layers
- 2 inches of Memory Foam
- 2 inches of Pressure Relieving Comfort Foam
- 4 inches of High-density Base Support Foam
Zinus Memory Foam Mattress Layers
The top layer is memory foam that conforms to the shape of your body and provides much of the softness.   This is 3 lb density foam with a 7-9 ILD rating.  ILD is the acronym for Indentation Load Deflection (and more recently called Indentation Force Deflection or IFD) and it simply means the pounds of pressure necessary to indent a 50 square inch round indentor foot into 4 inches of foam by 25%.  It is a means of describing firmness.
The second layer is pressure relieving foam which is designed to help support pressure points and ultimately relieve or reduce pain.  This layer is 1.8 lb density foam with a 20 ILD rating.
The third layer is high density base support foam.  This essentially supports the upper 2 layers.  It also helps the mattress keep its shape and enhances the durability of the mattress.
Mattress Cover
The entire mattress is encased in a foam and fiber white quilted box top cover.  This cover is not meant to be removed and it adds more softness to the mattress as well as additional airflow (good for cooling).  The manufacturer recommends spot cleaning with cold water and light detergent (as it should not be removed).
Mattress Materials
The mattress is made with what Zinus call BioFoam which minimizes petroleum based oils and instead uses plant based oils (although note the word “minimizes” which likely means that not all petroleum based oils have been replaced).
The Zinus Sleep Master Ultima uses foam that is CertiPUR-US certified which means the foam:
- Is made without ozone depleters
- Is made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP flame retardants
- Is made without mercury, lead or other heavy metals
- Is made without formaldehyde
- Is made without phthalates
- Has low VOC emissions for indoor air quality
You can learn more about this organization and these standards here.  Also, you can actually see Zinus listed as a participating company on the CertiPUR website here if you like.

Delivery & Unpacking
Zinus Memory Foam Mattress DeliveryLike many memory foam mattresses today, this one is shipped directly to your door in a box.  It is vacuum packed so that it fits in a smallish box (smallish for a mattress).  When opening make sure you are careful not to cut the mattress, and it is always handy to open the mattress package in the room where you intend to place the mattress.  Otherwise you will have to move it after it has expanded which can be a bit of a pain - a queen size, 8 inch Zinus Ultima Memory Foam mattress is 6.7 ft x 5.0 ft and weighs about 58 lbs.
After unpacking the mattress Zinus recommends waiting about 48 hours for it to fully expand.  However there are quite a few instances in which owners have found that the mattress becomes fully expanded in a shorter timeframe.  Although, as mentioned above, there are also some instances where the mattress does not fully expand to its advertized height no matter the timeframe.

Bed Frame
The mattress will work with pretty much any bed frame and the manufacturer indicates that it is also compatible with adjustable bed frames.  But this kind of mattress often needs solid support so a bed frame with limited gaps is a good idea.
The Zinus Sleep Master Memory Foam mattress carries a 10-year limited warranty.  A decent warranty is useful as you cannot try out this kind of mattress prior to buying.  The mattress is warranted against defects in workmanship and materials.  You can read more about the warranty here: Zinus Warranty
