Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea Mattress
- Details
When we read about a mattress infused with green tea we had to learn more. We are big fans of green tea and consume several cups every morning. Green tea is full of antioxidants which reduce free radicals in the body and protect cells from damage. Research also suggests that green tea improves brain function, physical performance and can even lower the risk of a number of diseases. We simply love the taste and the aroma and were wondering what does this beverage have to do with a mattress?
It turns out that the addition of green tea to a mattress actually helps to naturally neutralize odors and it keeps the mattress smelling fresh (at least this is what manufacturers are reporting). This is an especially useful feature for memory foam mattresses which are notorious for having a strong chemical smell.
The memory foam portion of the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea Mattress is indeed infused with a safe, natural green tea extract. The mattress is very popular right now and is a best-seller on Amazon. Presently there are over 1400 consumer ratings on Amazon and these provide an average score of 4.6 stars out of 5. The mattress is also quite affordable and can usually be found for under $300.
About Zinus The name Zinus isn’t that well known but the company also manufactures other names that you may have heard such as Spa Sensations, Sleep Master, Night Therapy, Best Price Mattress and others. Zinus mattresses tend to be reasonably affordable when compared to many other memory foam mattresses on the market today. This is perhaps related to them being more or less factory direct and the company doesn't spend the kind of money on marketing that you will see with the larger brands. In addition, the product is made offshore and takes advantage of lower costs. |

The mattress has several layers of different kinds of foam. The top layer is memory foam which is designed to conform to your body. The second layer is comfort foam which provides a level of pressure relief. The third layer (and sometimes fourth) is Airflow high-density foam which provides support, resilience and stability. The mattress also has a soft knitted fabric cover.
The following table shows the depths of foam in each layer for the different mattress heights:
8 inches | 10 inches | 12 inches | |
Layer 1 (memory foam) | 2 inches | 2.5 inches | 3 inches |
Layer 2 (comfort foam) | 2 inches | 2.5 inches | 2 inches |

All of the foam used in this mattress is CertiPUR-US certified. Certified foam products have passed rigorous tests ensuring low emissions for indoor air quality. Foams are tested for physical performance, environmental stewardship and indoor emissions. Certified foams have low VOC’s, no CFC’s or ozone depleters, no PBDE flame retardants, no heavy metals, no formaldehyde, and no prohibited phthalates. I’m sure CertiPUR-US does their job well but bear in mind that this group was put together by members of the global foam industry.
A short video highlighting what CertiPUR is all about is provided below.
With respect to the feel of the mattresses, it is very much a matter of preference. However it is also a function of how you sleep. Generally, the thicker the mattress the more plush it feels and the 10-12 inch mattresses feel a little softer and are a good fit for back and side sleepers. The shorter 8 inch mattress tends to feel a little firmer and is a better fit for a back sleeper.
In terms of delivery, the Zinus Green Tea mattress is vacuum packed, rolled then shipped in a box to your door via FedEx or UPS. When unpacked Zinus indicates that the mattress will expand to its full size in about 48 hours – although many owners report that it takes much less time. Also, the company highlights that their mattresses should be opened as soon as they are received because there may be decompression issues if the mattress is left compressed for too long after the date of manufacture. So it is best not to leave it boxed up and sitting in a room for weeks.
As shown above, the larger versions of these mattresses can be on the heavy side so you may need someone to help you move it after it is delivered. It is also a good idea to move it to a place where it can be aired out before unpacking, as it can be a little large and awkward to move after it decompresses.
Owner Insights
One of the most common comments from owners is that this mattress is soft yet firm. It seems a little contradictory but there are many comments to this effect and they essentially mean that the mattress is soft enough to be comfortable and firm enough to be supportive. These owners are quite pleased with the comfort level of the mattress.
Not everyone is sold on the “feel” of the mattress however, and there are folks who report that the mattress is simply too firm and others who report that it is too soft.
A number of owners have highlighted that this mattress alleviates back pain, pelvic pain, neck pain, etc. These claims are not unique to this memory foam mattress. We often see this kind of thing and it is especially common when consumers switch from an innerspring mattress to a memory foam mattress. A memory foam mattress moulds to your individual body shape and helps align and support joints with the correct amount of pressure dispersed up and down the length of your body. This is something that memory foam excels at and an innerspring mattress generally does not (at least not all innerspring mattresses).
The green tea is added to this mattress to help neutralize odors and keep the mattress smelling fresh. Does it work? Reports on this seem to run the gamut from yes, to partially, to no. In our experience however the amount of complaints related to off-gassing (odor) are quite low.
Some owners report that the mattress initially gives off a faint green tea scent that diminishes over time. Other folks say that the mattress has no smell whatsoever. Finally, there are some reports that the mattress has a chemical odor but that it goes away after a few days or even a few hours. Under the circumstances it is probably best to leave the mattress somewhere where it can be aired out before moving it into the bedroom.
Other common items highlighted by owners include the following:
- The mattress does not sleep hot. There are many comments to this effect. This is good because many memory foam mattresses sleep hot which can be a problem for some people.
- Many folks are pleased that there is little motion transfer across the mattress and that when one partner moves it does not disturb the other. This is a typical feature with a memory foam mattress and not necessarily exclusive to this mattress.
- There are a few reports that the mattress doesn't expand to the depth expected. It is sometimes one or two inches short.
- Several owners have commented about the low price of the mattress and how affordable it is, also highlighting that it is good deal.
