The mattress includes a quilted bamboo cover with 1.5 inches of soy-based soft reflex foam. There are also 3 inches of talalay latex foam (talalay is a process by which natural latex foam rubber is created). This talalay layer comes in a range of ILDs from 19 to 44. ILD stands for “Indentation Load Deflection” and it is a measure of how hard or soft a foam is. More specifically it measures the pressure necessary to indent by 1 inch a foam block 15 inches square by 4 inches deep. ILD ratings of 14 to 19 are quite soft, 24, 28 and 32 are firm and 36, 40 and 44 are extra firm.
If you place an order for this mattress you will be contacted by Dreamfoam Bedding customer service to discuss the best mattress firmness level for your sleeping needs. Consumers report that the company is both knowledgeable and friendly. Mattress firmness default is 6 but can be provided between 1 and 10 (with 1 being very firm and 10 very soft). The relationship between the ILD figures and the 1-10 mattress firmness ratings is not known but the company likely chose 1-10 simply because it is easier for folks to work with.
The bulk of the mattress is comprised of 5.5 inches of 2.35 lb density base foam with convolutions to increase airflow and cooling. We have read that this layer of base foam has an ILD rating of 32. The density of foam is measured in weight (in lbs) per cubic foot of the material. It should be noted that these mattresses are not lightweight and a King size weighs about 115 lbs (Queen size is about 85 lbs and Full size is about 75 lbs).
The Ultimate Dreams mattress is hypoallergenic and, like a memory foam mattress, it will conform to one’s body shape and provide support at pressure points. It is also made in the USA – a nice feature these days. The mattress doesn’t require flipping and it carries a 10 year warranty that covers manufacturing defects, the breakdown of the foam and body impressions. It ships vacuum packed and arrives in a highly compressed roll. After opening it will expand to its normal size in a few hours.
