Coco Mat Mattress by Natural Mat
- Details

The Natural Mat Company manufactures their mattresses in Devon England but their products are also widely sold in the USA. Part of the company’s marketing efforts include highlighting that their products are bought by the likes of Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow. Natural Mat mattresses are handmade using sustainable natural and organic materials. They are also non-allergenic and comfortable. Owners give these crib mattresses high praise and about the only area of “concern” is the significant cost.
Owner ratings for the Coco Mat mattress are not easy to come by but a few were found on Amazon. They indicate a very high level of consumer satisfaction as can be seen in the table below.

Natural Mat sells a few different baby mattresses in the US; the Coco Mat and the Latex Mat. The more popular of the two is the Coco Mat (it is also the least expensive of the two). The Coco Mat gets its name from the fact that it uses “coir”, a material made from the husks of coconuts. Coir is actually the brown fibrous material found between the outer casing and the hard inner shell of the coconut. The coir used in the Coco Mat is 100 percent organic and is sourced from a plantation in Sri Lanka that doesn’t use chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
The coir layer provides support and is also very breathable. A layer of lambswool surrounds the coir core. The lambswool comes from English farms near Devon and Dorset that are certified as organic. The lambswool also has lavender, lemon and eucalyptus essential oils added which make it dust-mite resistant and hypo-allergenic. In addition, wool is naturally flame resistant and an excellent insulator, not to mention soft and comfortable. The Coco Mat passes US, European and British fire regulations without the addition of any chemicals.

A 100% organic cotton cover wraps the mattress. It is also unbleached and undyed, and can be removed and washed. Natural Mat indicates that the cover can be washed at 140 F and this temperature will kill both bacteria and dust mites. No chemicals, PVC’s or plastics are used in the Coco Mat mattress. There are also no glues or bonding agents.
Published mattress dimensions are somewhat confusing. We often see Coco Mat dimensions of 52 x 28 x 3.9 inches but dimensions of 52 x 27 x 3.9 inches are also common. Some frustrated customers have highlighted that the mattress is indeed 27 inches wide and not 28.
A video about the company and its manufacturing process is provided below:
The Coco Mat weighs 15.4 lbs so it is not too heavy and is light enough to easily lift and move. The company does take its “green” approach quite seriously and all packaging materials for the mattresses are 100% recyclable and biodegradable. The Coco Mat comes with a 5-year manufacturer’s guarantee and is generally found online for between $350 and $400.
