About Stearns & Foster

Stearns & Foster was founded in 1846 by the two partners George S. Stearns and Seth C. Foster.  At the time the company was located in Cincinnati, Ohio and was involved in manufacturing upholstery for horse drawn carriages. They are now providers of luxury mattresses[REF Stearns & Foster Mattress Reviews 2010]

It was Seth Foster who involved the company in the development of mattresses using George Stearns newly invented process for cotton bunting.  Over the years the company became well known in the US for manufacturing quality mattresses.  These were sold through high-end retailers such as Bloomingdale’s in New York and Marshall Field & Co. in Chicago.

In the early 1900’s (and in a step the mattress industry had not seen before) Stearns & Foster brought in renowned artists and stylists to help with the design of the Stearns & Foster mattresses.  This “out of the box” thinking proved successful and helped the company develop and maintain its reputation as a maker of fine mattresses.

In 1983 the Stearns & Foster Company was bought by Sealy.  They are presently Sealy’s luxury brand of mattress (the Sealy website states that these mattresses use Mongolian horsehair, high-grade wool, cashmere and silk).

Stearns & Foster presently offer three different sleep sets:

- Traditional
- Silver Dream
- Golden Elegance

The Traditional starts at about 1200USD (Queen) and depending on the options can go up to about 1500USD.  The Silver Dream is a significant step up, starting at about 3000USD while their top of the line mattress, the Golden Elegance, starts at approximately 4000USD.  All prices are based on a Queen size bed.  According to the Canadian version of the Stearns & Foster site (much of the information on the US sites seems to have recently disappeared), the mattresses also come in Twin, Full, Queen, King, California King.

There are a large number of Stearns and Foster mattresses on Amazon and you can view them here: Stearns and Foster on Amazon.  Remember that retailers use different mattress names/models so it is difficult to comparison shop.  You have to do your due diligence.

If you are looking for the nearest place (in the US) to view or buy a Stearns & Foster mattress you may wish to use this outlet locator.  It provides the ability to search either by zip code or retailer name.

I bought a Stearns and Foster Abbotsford mattress a few months ago and it is the most uncomfortable bed I have ever had. Horrible and expensive to boot. What kind of luxury is this? Well after searching, I come to learn that the beds are no longer made the way the original owners produced them. Sealy has had many issues with their models. I would not recommend S&F beds.

We purchased a King S & F bed from Sit and Sleep and it is a horrible bed. Both sides of the bed have caved in and there has been no help from Sit & Sleep. We notified them of this problem within the first 100 days of owning the mattress. The mattress was expensive and we cannot even sleep next to one another. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE MATTRESSES and also do not buy a mattress from SIT and SLEEP they do not
take responsibility for their products.

I worked at sears for a while and I can tell you that if you purchase a boxspring with the mattress, then the warranty is cut and dried. if not, you'll likely run into issues of each company blaming the other for the defect. the only way to cover your ass it to buy them together. This is one of the reasons that you can get mismatch sets for cheaper.

bought a stearns and foster euro plush it was not a plush it was very firm like sleeping on a brick. they told us the label could have been put on the wrong mattress, however they would not stand behind. Do not go to Mattress Firm.
mattress buying is worse than car buying and a lot of these dirty salesman need to be stopped and put out of business, my advise is get a lawyer, there is a consumer protection lawsuit and I think if more people would stand up for what they know is right it could put a stop to this, when you put so much money into something, it should be what you want. Pride in making something to last is evidently a lost art.

We bought a Sterns and Foster mattress from a company in Gaston, NC. We can't find sheets to fit the thick sides of the mattress. It sleeps great but what a hassle changing the bed. Is it worth the hassle every week I think not. We go 22" sheets and they are still hell getting them on the mattress. Please help any ideas.
