As the name states this is not an innerspring mattress. It has no springs whatsoever and is a combination of soy enhanced foam and latex foam (both are hypoallergenic). Soy enhanced foam is more durable than conventional foams and soy is also a renewable resource. The soy enhanced foam is used on the infant side of the mattress (as it is firmer). The latex foam is used on the toddler side of the mattress and provides a good combination of support and comfort. Latex also offers pressure point relief and breathes fairly well so it helps reduce heat build-up.
The soy enhanced foam is CertiPUR-US Certified. CertiPUR is an extension of a European program developed by the association of European flexible polyurethane foam block manufacturers. They test foams for physical performance, environmental stewardship and indoor emissions. Certified foam products have met a specific set of criteria based on these tests. Bear in mind however that this group was put together by members of the global foam industry.
The latex used in the Sealy Posturepedic Springfree mattress is Oeko-Tex Certified. The Oeka-Tex Association consists of fourteen textile and research institutes in both Europe and Japan and it has agencies and offices in more than 40 countries. The Association is responsible for managing the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This standard was introduced in the early 1990’s to protect consumers and the general public from harmful substances in textiles.
The combination of foams makes for a very lightweight mattress and the Sealy Posturepedic Springfree actually weighs less than 12 lbs (11.4 to be precise). There are a number of consumer comments indicating how very light the mattress is and how easy it is to change sheets. The mattress also comes with a jacquard fabric cover treated with Staph-Gard®. Staph-Gard® is said to resist stains, odors, mildew, and to inhibit bacterial growth.
The mattress dimensions are (W x L x H) 27.2 x 51.6 x 5.5 inches and it has square edges to ensure no gaps between mattress and crib. Several owners have indicated they like this feature. Although it has also been pointed out that one should carefully measure their crib and compare these to the mattress dimensions before making a purchase – just to ensure there is a proper fit.
The Sealy Posturepedic Springfree Soybean & Latex Foam-Core Crib Mattress meets Federal Flammability Standard 16 CFR 1633 and does this while using no toxic fire retardants. It is also phthalate compliant and carries a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials.
